Review
“The Merida Big.Trail is going to be a lot of fun for someone getting their first proper mountain bike, or a rider looking for a trail hardtail without breaking the bank.”
– Mike Blewitt
The Merida Big.Trail 400 is a serious step-up from the Merida Big.Trail 200. It’s still incredibly fun, combining the simplicity of a hardtail with long travel excitement to create an All Mountain Bike that’s as at home on technical descents as it is climbing. The Big.Trail offers modern trail geometry, big 29″ wheels and long travel for a grippy, yet comfortable ride. Merida has designed the Big.Trail 400 to get the most out of a hardtail that is easy to set up, maintain and affordable. With the Big.Trail 400, you get an All Mountain Hardtail that practically replaces the need for a dual-suspension mountain bike, and, is twice as fun!
The Big.Trail 400s lightweight alloy frame has a clean and simple look thanks to the internally routed cables and is perfectly paired with an upgraded Suntour XCR34 Air Fork that offers 140mm travel. Indeed, the upgraded fork offers adjustable rebound and lockout for a custom ride suited to your style. This customisation means the Big.Trail 400 climbs steep profiles proficiently, bombs down technical trails and can really be sent over gaps! With the included Merida-branded long travel dropper post, standover height can be reduced allowing you to manoeuvre more easily as the trail gets more technical. The modern trail geometry ensures that you can maintain control even when pushing your limit and yet still climb with ease thanks to the central seating position over the bottom bracket. While the 1×10 speed Shimano Deore drivetrain with remote actuated clutch allows you to ride aggressively on trails all day long without being concerned by your chain getting snagged. When you factor in the Tektro Hydraulic Disc brakes which are powerful enough to quickly bring you to a stop, and won’t fade after repeated braking, you’ll be confident to really send it and aggressively attack corners as you chase PBs. Finally, the inclusion of multiple mounting points for two bottles and hidden rack, fender and kickstand mounts means the Big.Trail 400 is just as capable out on the trails, as it is bike-packing or commuting.
The Big.Trail 400 is an amazing Hardtail Mountain Bike for those riders wanting a fun yet capable bike for conquering demanding technical trails. If you’re looking for a model that climbs more efficiently for long days spent in the bike park, then you should consider the Big.Trail 500. It offers a very similar ride to the 400, although it has an additional sprocket to increase the maximum ratio for better climbing ability. Equally, it has the added bonus of a RockShox Recon Silver fork offering greater durability and an increased service life when compared to the Big Trail 400s Suntour XCR34. The Merida Big.Trail 400 is a great All Mountain Hardtail offering endless fun and versatility out on the trails.
MODERN TRAIL GEOMETRY
The long reach, slack 65.5° head angle and steep seat angle place you directly over the bottom bracket. This results in a lower centre of gravity and ensures the BIG.TRAIL does exactly what you ask when you descend even when the trail is gnarly! Equally, this ensures that it maintains its impressive climbing ability.
VERSATILE
Long travel ensures the Big.Trail 400 is comfortable in all situations! The fork’s adjustable damping, lockout and frame’s hidden rack, fender and kickstand mounts ensure the Big.Trail 400 has endless uses – no more need for multiple bikes!
MERIDA DROPPER POST
Merida long travel dropper posts allow for a low standover height when you’re full send – keep your centre of gravity low and bomb down the trail.
